MOTHER HEART
Mother Heart is a film created by Blue Pieta that explores love as a redemptive and undying force within our cycles of violence and disaster.
As cycles of catastrophe encroach on our contemporary lives like genocide and climate change, I see Love as our hope. I researched Motherhood in the context of genocide. I read personal accounts from survivors of the Bosnian genocide (1992-1995) at the Museum of Genocide in Sarajevo. I was most struck by the accounts of Mothers who expressed the deepest iterations of Love. One Mother (anonymous) describes how she aches to touch the body of her son:

I wanted to kiss him bone by bone

If we found more bones we would organise a funeral again and again as long as our hearts are beating
This led me to research accounts of Mothers in Palestine today. I was struck by the account of Mother Raneen Al Hijazi in a CNN article (May 2024):

As she took her first breath, I came back to life. The doctors told me it was a miracle.

I found in these accounts pure poetry that reflects a redemptive and undying love in the context of immense devastation. I wanted to imagine a world where we all love each other in the ways these mothers love their children. I found a connection between the love within these mothers and mystics like Etty Hilesum, a writer who died in Auschwitz, she states:
Through suffering, I have learned that we must share our love with the whole of creation

I wanted the film to be a prayer for these women that embalmed them through remembrance and transmitted the redemptive and magical powers of their Love as a vehicle to transform our world. It was filmed in my family home a place where I found this love despite devastating encounter.
